Amsterdam Centraal was one of the busiest stations in the Netherlands before the corona pandemic, with approximately 200.000 passengers a day. The hope is that after the corona crisis this number will return and even increase. In the coming ten years, Amsterdam Central station will be thoroughly renovated, this Route Decision was recently published in the Government Gazette. The plan is to start the renovation at the end of 2021.

State Secretary Stientje van Veldhoven (Infrastructure and Water Management) “It is important that we prepare Amsterdam Central for the future, both rail and station. It may be quiet at Amsterdam CS now, but travelers will come back after the pandemic. It is even expected that more people will want to use the station than before the crisis. Thanks to these adjustments, the passenger really benefits and the train is ready every ten minutes. ”

The station itself and the track will be tackled during this renovation. The ultimate goal of this renewal is that from 2030 onwards, a train will run to the capital from all directions at least every ten minutes. By realizing this renovation, there will be more space for passengers and trains in the future. The plans for the renovation were drawn up together with the municipality of Amsterdam.

John Voppen, CEO of ProRail: “Amsterdam is growing, just like the cities in the region. That is why we want 275.000 travelers to be able to catch the train at Amsterdam CS every day in ten years' time. By removing points and upgrading the track with the best signals, we will ensure that many more and much more trains will be able to run here in the coming years. ”

ProRail regional director Harro Homan: “We want to give travelers more space. Thanks to the new modifications to the station, we ensure that travelers can move around the station more easily and the flow improves. We also connect cities such as Alkmaar, Hoorn and Castricum even better with Amsterdam, and Amsterdam even better with the region. ”
