A report was issued at two companies because no ADR safety advisor had been appointed, and at three companies the ILT blocked shipments of hazardous substances for transport.
The Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) recently carried out various inspections in East Gelderland, aimed at the transport of hazardous substances. During these inspections, which took place both on the road and at companies, several violations came to light that could potentially cause dangerous situations for public safety.
The ILT examined a total of 27 road vehicles. During one of the inspections, inspectors found a tanker that was empty but not yet cleaned of a corrosive liquid. This vehicle not only failed to have a complete transport document, but also had the nearest vapor return valve open — an act of negligence that could pose serious risks. In addition, the distance between the last valve of the discharge pipe and the buffer beam was insufficient, which posed an additional safety risk.

Another vehicle was checked in which old batteries were transported in plastic containers. These batteries protruded above the edges of the bins, and the bins were missing key labels that would identify the contents as 'environmentally hazardous' and 'Class 8'. These violations resulted in the drawing up of an official report.
The ILT supervises the transport of hazardous substances by road: the transport itself, loading/unloading and the packaging method.
The inspections also extended to 23 companies, which were visited unannounced. Similar violations were noted. For example, a report was issued at two companies because no ADR safety advisor had been appointed. In other cases, employees were not trained or insufficiently trained, which also led to warnings. In addition, the transport of hazardous substances was blocked at three companies until the shipments were adjusted in accordance with the applicable regulations.
These inspections are part of the ILT's broader task to monitor the safe transport of Hazardous Substances. Under ADR, the International Agreement for the Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road, all parties involved — from consignors to carriers and packers — have specific safety obligations. These rules are essential to ensure that the transport of hazardous substances is as safe as possible and does not cause harm to people, animals and the environment.
