All in all, the 39th ASML Marathon shows that Eindhoven is more than a technology hub. It is a city where sports and community spirit come to a head, year after year.

Eindhoven transforms every second weekend of October into a sporting spectacle, entirely dedicated to the ASML Marathon. The 39th edition of this large-scale event can count on an impressive participation: 27.000 runners and a multitude of supporters filled the streets of the city. Although the festivities significantly affect the accessibility of the city, the enthusiasm remained unaffected.

The car landscape in the city took on a completely different look during the marathon weekend. A large number of streets became temporary locked to make way for the thousands of runners and their supporters. The organization behind the Eindhoven Marathon urged everyone to use public transport as much as possible. Eindhoven Central Station, conveniently located within walking distance of both the start and finish locations and the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), served as a central mobility hub. The street closures also affected bus traffic, resulting in some lines not running or operating on an alternative schedule.

The youngest sports enthusiasts could enjoy themselves during the special children's run, while the more adult public gathered for the five-kilometer run, which started on Montgomerylaan. Our editorial staff took their position on Europalaan, equipped with cameras and full of enthusiasm to encourage the runners and capture memorable moments.

The marathon party was also reflected in the weather forecast. With a starting temperature of 17 degrees in the morning, rising to a comfortable 21 degrees towards the afternoon, both participants and spectators could enjoy ideal weather conditions.

impact

The impact of the ASML Marathon extends beyond just the sporting aspect; it is an event that stimulates the local economy and strengthens the social fabric of the city. Cafés, restaurants and shops have noticed a significant increase in customers. Hotels are often fully booked months in advance by both national and international visitors. And not to forget, the Marathon is a stage for charities and awareness campaigns, which benefit from the increased attention.

Everything was also arranged down to the last detail in terms of safety. Additional security guards and emergency services were present to deal with any emergencies. Volunteers lined the running routes to provide runners with water and moral support.

This weekend, the kick-off of the marathon was not only a sporting challenge but also an example of organizational skills, a demonstration of hospitality and a showcase for the versatility that Eindhoven has to offer.
