New measures stimulate cycling culture, improve accessibility for patients and relieve parking pressure around the hospital.

In a world where climate change is becoming an increasingly pressing issue, companies and organizations are looking for ways to reduce their environmental footprint. Ghent University Hospital (UZ Gent) has set itself an ambitious goal and a green revolution in the field of commuting.

The concept is as simple as it is effective. All employees who live within a radius of three kilometers from UZ Gent and who work during the day are encouraged to leave their car at home and use the bicycle. The policy makes exceptions for night and on-call shifts. In a next phase, the rule will also be applied to employees who live within five kilometers.

The goal is clear: reduce the environmental impact of the daily commute, avoid traffic jams and relieve parking pressure around the hospital to ensure smooth access for patients. According to UZ Gent, this is a win-win situation for everyone.

To support this green transition, UZ Gent has chosen to give its employees a helping hand. It offers leased bicycles as an alternative to the car and provides additional bicycle parking facilities to make cycling even more attractive.

With this policy, UZ Gent takes an important step forward and serves as a shining example for other organisations. If we want our cities and our planet to have a sustainable future, then we all have to do our part. And that starts with rethinking how we move.

This action by UZ Gent is an inspiring example of how institutions and companies can support the transition to sustainable transport. It not only changes the way we look at commuting, but also the way we interact with our cities and our environment. It could be the ideal scenario that other cities and companies are striving for.

It will be interesting to follow the progress of this regulation and evaluate its impact, also during the cold winter months. But one thing is certain: UZ Gent is taking the right step in the right direction as far as mobility is concerned.
