Since last Thursday, all students in Berlin can use the public transport of the capital free of charge - be it U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram or bus. The new Schüler ticket, issued by the Transport Association of Berlin and Brandenburg (VBB), applies to all ticket holders who travel in the AB zone of Berlin and cover most of the city.

Since August 1, children over six can also travel for free on Berlin's public transport, even if they are not attending a school in Berlin, as long as they bring a school ID. All trainees, or Azubis as they are commonly called in German, are able to take all Berlin and Brandenburg transit lines for a highly subsidized cost of € 365 per year (which equals € 1 per day). The goal is "to relieve families and young people of both costs of mobility while helping the environment," the VBB wrote in a press release.

“A milestone has been reached with the new Schüler ticket to bring young people closer to public transport. Families benefit from savings and the climate from additional emissions, ”said Berlin traffic senator Regine Günther.

According to the Berliner Morgenpost, approximately 360.000 students will benefit from the new ticket, which was arranged last year by the Berlin Social Democratic (SPD), the left-wing and green coalition party that sits in the government.
