The city of Lille is a place of history and culture, where the past and the present go hand in hand. A visit to the restaurant 'Le Napoleon' almost seems like a trip back in time, but not in the way one would expect.

On arrival in Lille via the train route from the Netherlands, Lille-Europe Station greets you with its striking presence in Euralille. For shopping enthusiasts, the station's location in one of France's most renowned shopping centers promises to be a pleasant surprise.

The design of the station is both functional and aesthetic. The infrastructure is well organized and it is easy to find your way between the different modes of transport. This is essential in a hub like Lille-Europe, where trains, buses, metros and taxis converge seamlessly. The proximity to Lille-Flandres offers travelers an added convenience, allowing them to travel or transfer to nearby cities with ease.

One of the most impressive aspects of the public transport network in Lille is undoubtedly the automated metro system. Although the 40th anniversary celebrations passed quietly, we cannot overlook the impact and efficiency of these two automatic metro lines, which stretch over 45 km with 60 stops.

The city also deserves praise for its extensive bus network. With more than 60 bus lines, travelers can reach practically every nook and cranny of the city and beyond.

However, as with any major urban transportation system, delays and congestion can occur during peak times. Nevertheless, overall, the coordination between different modes of transport is admirable and makes traveling smooth and easy for residents and visitors alike.

With a nod to history, I wonder if the owners of 'Le Napoleon' might still have a bone to pick with the Flemish, and this is their subtle revenge for the Battle of Waterloo.

If you're visiting the city of Lille and looking for a place to enjoy some local beer, 'Le Napoleon' could definitely be on your radar. With a range of beers on tap, this is an aficionado's paradise. However, when it comes to the culinary experience, doubt sets in.

Located opposite the Lille de Flandres station, 'Le Napoleon' is undoubtedly strategically placed and serves as a gateway to Lille's vibrant inner city. But don't let the convenient location fool you. If your stomach is grumbling and longing for a tasty meal, I'd advise continuing your search elsewhere.

A first look at the menu might suggest an authentic Lille experience. However, the reality is far from this expectation. While you might expect to find yourself in the gastronomic capital of northern France, the predominantly Flemish dishes will surprise you. But not in a good way. As a Fleming, I was almost ashamed of the interpretation of our traditional dishes. It seems as if the chef, perhaps in an attempt to be innovative or edgy, has completely missed the essence and finesse of Flemish cuisine.

It is ironic, and perhaps fitting, that a restaurant named 'Le Napoleon' - a reference to one of the most famous figures in French history - seems to be failing in a way that evokes memories of the historic defeat at Waterloo . It proves that not all gastronomy in Lille is a culinary battle next story which I noted down a block away.
