This project is mainly intended to gain more experience with the technology of solar cells on bicycle paths.

Monday 22 May the construction of a 'solar cycle path' will start along the provincial road N285, between the A16 and Wagenberg. Nearly 500 solar panels will be integrated into the asphalt top layer over a length of approximately 600 metres.

This project is mainly intended to gain more experience with the technology of solar cells on bicycle paths. There is also a small piece of 'solar cycle path' along the N395 near Oirschot and along the N324 near Grave. Solar cycle paths ensure that the available space is used optimally and at the same time it produces sustainable energy. In this way it contributes to the climate objectives.

Double use of space

The advantage of this new technique is double use of space: use of the same space for both mobility and energy generation. By generating clean energy in this way, you save space that is needed for windmills or solar meadows, for example.

Project Sun on Infra

The construction of the solar cycle path at Wagenberg is part of a larger project called 'Zon op Infra'. The province of North Brabant is working on this together with the provinces of North and South Holland. By joining forces and tendering for a larger number of square meters at the same time, it becomes possible for market parties to invest in technology. A route is also being built in the province of North Holland, along the N232 near Vijfhuizen.

Monitoring

The aim of the project is emphatically also to learn from it. How does the material hold up, what does it require in terms of maintenance, what are the experiences of cyclists with this road surface and what is the energy yield? That is why the solar cycle paths in this project will be monitored for 5 years via measurements, according to the Province of Brabant.
