The municipality of Amstelveen recently organized an excursion along various public transport locations together with the traveler organization Rover. In addition to a large number of council members, Connexxion, GVB and the Amsterdam Transport Region were also present. In the presence of alderman Herbert Raat (traffic and transport), the strengths and weaknesses of the local public transport system were highlighted.

“The idea for the public transport excursion arose after a conversation we had with the travel organization Rover. We can talk about bottlenecks in public transport at the office, but it is of course better to experience and see them in practice. That is why we have invited the municipal councilors to join us on a public transport excursion, so that we can see with our own eyes where improvements can be made. I am pleased that a large number of council members have accepted our invitation. As a municipality, we can now take targeted action and, where necessary, ask the Amsterdam Transport Region, Connexxion and GVB to address the points for improvement that they have.”

public transport excursion

The route passed several public transport stops and transfer locations between different lines, so that a good picture of an 'average journey' of a public transport passenger is created. The locations have been suggested by Rover, among others. At each stop someone from Rover or the municipality gave a brief explanation of situations that are good or could be improved. For example, an action may be required from the municipality or from the GVB, Connexxion or the Amsterdam Transport Region. Consider, for example, the removal of orphaned bicycles, improvements in the sense of safety, wheelchair accessibility, walking routes and distances. The coming period will be used to identify the bottlenecks and possible improvements and to take action where necessary, according to the municipality of Amstelveen.
