On 21 December, the Flemish government reached an agreement on student transport in special education. Transport company De Lijn immediately set to work on developing new proposals for special education student transport. Meanwhile, 276 schools (87%) received a new proposal for the transport of their students. Of these, 172 schools, more than half of all schools, are ready to start with the new planning.

Long journeys will soon be a thing of the past for their 2.732 students. The other schools will normally receive a proposal in the course of this week. After coordination with and approval from the school, De Lijn can put the necessary specifications for additional transport on the market. About a week later, the new planning can start. One school can already use minibuses and taxis for their students. As a test case school, De Dageraad in Kortessem (MPI) and OV4 Hasselt have already drawn up their planning in close consultation with De Lijn, and have already started today.

"Improving student transport is custom work, which is worked out together with many parties. The ultimate goal is to provide the best possible solution tailored to each child. This already leads to satisfaction at various schools."

Flanders has 318 special education schools where at least one pupil is on the bus for more than 90 minutes. In December, the Flemish Government decided to provide 11 million extra for additional means of transport and bus assistance for these students. 276 schools (87%) have now received a new proposal for the transport of their students and concrete agreements have already been made with 172 schools (54%) about the start of their new planning. 67 schools wish to start on January 31, 49 in February, 42 after the Crocus and 14 to be determined in this period.

In the meantime, De Lijn is continuing to work in consultation with the schools: a tailor-made solution must and will be found for every student who spends more than 90 minutes on the bus. The scoop is for the students of the Dageraad in Kortessem and Hasselt, where the new scheme has already started today.
