In 2020, 356.051 new passenger cars were registered, which is more than 90.000 - or 20 percent - less than in 2019, according to official figures from BOVAG, RAI Association and data agency RDC. Due to the economic consequences of the corona crisis, the number of new cars lagged significantly behind the previous year. Electric cars made up almost a fifth of the total market last year.

The number of registered new passenger cars reached a level of 2020 in December 42.829, which was just under 3 percent more than in the same month in 2019. The exact figures per type of fuel and / or propulsion are not yet known, but for the time being approximately two thirds of the registrations have been obtained. month to concern an electric car. Over the entire calendar year, some 70.000 vehicles accounted for almost 20 percent of the market share for electric cars; in 2019 there were 61.500 with a share of 14 percent. The most registered models last year were therefore almost all electrically powered and for the first time the South Korean KIA with the Niro is the most popular model in the Netherlands. Just like in previous years, Volkswagen remained the most popular in terms of brand with a share of more than 12,5 percent.

EV remains attractive
For 2021, RAI Vereniging and BOVAG expect some recovery in the domestic car market with 400.000 units compared to the previous corona year. Even then, at least one fifth of the registrations will concern a fully electrically powered car, it is expected. These vehicles remain more attractive for business drivers compared to fuel cars, the range continues to increase and the 'EV' is also increasingly within reach of private individuals financially, whether or not through private lease. Electric driving is increasingly becoming the standard for business drivers.

Tax changes
Because the tax addition for private use by business drivers has been increased from 1 January 2021 to 12 percent over the first 40.000 euros of the consumer price for an electric passenger car (instead of 8 percent over the first 45.000 euros in 2019), December large numbers of electric cars registered. A similar effect could also be seen a year earlier; at the time, the addition amounted to 4 percent over the first 50.000 euros. From the date of first registration, the low addition can be used for a maximum of five years. Any excess above the limit in the consumer price is subject to a 22 percent addition, the same rate as applies to the entire consumer price of business cars on traditional fuels. Bovag reports this on them website through this message.
