The bullet is finally through the church, travel organization Corendon can be taken over by travel organization Sunweb. The Netherlands Authority for Consumers & Markets (ACM) reports on their website that they have approved this. Both travel organizations offer package tours. Package holidays are very popular among consumers. The number of large tour operators will go from three to two after this takeover. Travel organization TUI is one of them.

According to the Netherlands Authority for Consumers & Markets (ACM), there will be enough competition after the takeover in the field of package travel. This is evident from extensive economic research. Travel organization Sunweb wanted to take over Corendon Holding earlier. The companies asked the Authority for Consumers & Markets (ACM) for permission for the acquisition on 6 March 2020, but the consequences of the corona crisis intervened. The corona crisis has had enormous consequences and even for the travel industry, it is guesswork about the consequences for the future. ACM has therefore assumed the situation in the market before the corona crisis.

Martijn Snoep, chairman of the board of the ACM: “Consumers who want to go on holiday to the sun have had a lot of choice in recent years, also due to the growing offer via the internet. Package holidays remain popular due to the low price and the convenience of 'all-in-one' booking. Sunweb and Corendon are the numbers 2 and 3 and after the takeover will be about the same size as the largest player TUI. That is why we wanted to investigate extensively whether this takeover restricts competition, causing prices to rise or quality to fall. That is not the case."
