The Central Planning Bureau takes into account an economic recession and entrepreneurs in the Lage Weide business park as well. Traffic jam is not the first thing that comes to mind in these days. Nevertheless, Lage Weide now wants to put together an action package to improve the accessibility of the site in a sustainable manner and invest in sustainable bicycle traffic.

After all, traffic is expected to continue to increase strongly after the recession. And more than 40 percent of the car traffic destined for Lage Weide comes from a radius of 5 kilometers around the business park. That is a good cycling distance and that is why the time has now come to let employees of companies on Lage Weide take the bicycle. That is one of the conclusions that the business community is linking to a study that Strukton carried out on behalf of the Park Management Lage Weide foundation.

attack plan for vitality of business park

The research report makes recommendations for three interrelated themes: traffic safety on Lage Weide, traffic circulation on the site itself (internal accessibility) and external accessibility of Lage Weide. The entrepreneurs of the business park want to have a quick discussion with Rijkswaterstaat, the Province of Utrecht and other parties directly involved to draw up an attack plan that will tackle the biggest bottlenecks for the near future.

safe and vital

“If we want people to cycle to work on Lage Weide, a coherent package of measures is required. The cycling route network lacks a few important links and that is why too many accidents still happen. In addition, we need better street lighting, a good solution for trucks looking for a parking space and we want to take on a lot of other actions. We desperately need the help of the Municipality of Utrecht and other road authorities for this. Right now. Their commitment to tackle the Demka Bridge is a big step in the right direction, ”says Josien Van Breda.

The investigation shows, among other things, that there is no simple solution for the structural traffic jams from Lage Weide to the tunnel tube on A2 in the evening rush hour. The motorway network around Utrecht cannot handle the large amounts of traffic from the A2 to the A12 at the Oudenrijn junction in the coming years. But during the corona pandemic it also became clear how important a vital business park with distribution centers for food and other daily facilities is.
