As is known, the government hopes that the consumer will accept the vouchers that airlines issue in aviation. The same Dutch government does not guarantee the vouchers that airlines offer consumers for a canceled flight. This means that they run the risk of the relevant airline going bankrupt for a longer period of time and the voucher losing its value.

For the Minister of Nieuwenhuizen of Infrastructure and Water Management a concern. Not only in the Netherlands, but throughout Europe where companies have switched to the issue of vouchers. The Dutch are therefore in possession of vouchers issued by foreign airlines for flights from foreign airports. She is therefore committed to guaranteeing the vouchers in a European context, which protects voucher holders against bankruptcy of the airline that issued the voucher.

It also urges the aviation sector to make the vouchers as attractive as possible, for example by increasing flexibility and making vouchers transferable to the consumer. Airlines must also provide consumers with adequate and complete information about the vouchers. The Minister believes that they should take responsibility for their passengers, of whom they currently ask a lot.

Future passenger protection is also important. Not only for themselves, but also for the recovery of the aviation sector after the crisis. It is not inconceivable that people are now reluctant to buy airline tickets. People's confidence can be strengthened by offering them more protection.

“This is also where my commitment lies in Europe, where I would like to argue for an exploration of the possibility of setting up a European flight ticket guarantee fund. Such a fund can, for example, be structurally financed by a surcharge on the ticket price, and affected passengers can therefore be financially compensated in the event of bankruptcy of the airline with which they had booked. I see opportunities to combine this proposal with a guarantee on the vouchers. ”, Said Cora van Nieuwenhuizen in response to a letter to the House of Representatives in response to questions from members Schonis and Paternotte (both D66).
