In these uncertain times, you may be hesitant to book a flight. Pieter Elbers, KLM President and CEO, is doing everything he can to gain the trust of frequent flyer members at KLM via a special email. As the world faces an unprecedented outbreak of COVID-19 (coronavirus), KLM realizes more than ever the importance of being a trusted travel partner.

“In these uncertain times, I fully understand that you may be hesitant to book a flight. I can assure you that KLM has taken all necessary precautions to protect your health and that of your loved ones. I would like to personally explain to you which steps we take to meet the highest standards for safety and hygiene on board and beyond, ”says Elbers.

Before departure

KLM always cleans and disinfects the aircraft to the highest standards. This includes your personal space such as tables, armrests and headrests, seat belt buckles, etc., and common areas such as kitchens, carpets and toilets.

Once in the air

The risk of infection with COVID-19 on board is minimal. However, the cabin crew does everything to keep the cabin clean. The air is refreshed continuously with fresh air, and our hospital-grade HEPA filters trap 99,99% of pathogens, including COVID-19.

Should a passenger show symptoms of the coronavirus, a strict infectious disease protocol will be in place. Special corona kits, available on every flight, help prevent the spread of the virus. The crew takes care of the passenger with complaints and assists those who were nearby.

Strict hygiene rules

The strong focus on hygiene applies to the entire organization, including the catering services. Ingredients are fresh and locally sourced, and catering people are trained to meet the strictest hygiene and safety guidelines.

“I can assure you that we work closely with the experts from the World Health Organization and the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) on a daily basis. We keep a close eye on developments and consistently base our decisions solely on facts, ”says Elbers

Change flights for free

Elbers also understands that passengers are concerned about the situation at the destination. That is why frequent flyer travelers at KLM can now temporarily change the ticket without any change costs.
