The speed limit on the highway is again 100 kilometers per hour between 06:19 and 100:XNUMX. Rijkswaterstaat started replacing signs along highways on Thursday after the evening rush hour where a speed reduction to XNUMX km / h will take effect. Most plates were already in place, but were still covered with a cover or tape.

The speed reduction to 100 kilometers per hour on the highways will officially start on Monday. But on some highways before. From the moment the plastic is removed from the traffic signs, the new speed applies. There cannot be two speed regimes on one road. So what is on the board is leading.

XNUMXs are back

“I'll drive a hundred when Den Uyl crashes” was stated on many bumper stickers by motorists when the first speed limit on highways was introduced in the XNUMXs.

Driving 100 kilometers per hour was once a decision of the cabinet of the social democratic foreman Joop den Uyl. The new traffic measure does not mean that the police will carry out extra checks for speeding offenses. Most fines stem from signals picked up by radar systems, such as route controls, fixed cameras and mobile cameras. They are also geared to the new speed of 100 kilometers.

be careful with the navigation app

Not all navigation apps will be directly geared to the speed reduction from 130 to 100 kilometers per hour in the Netherlands. Many navigation apps show the speed limit on the road you are driving, but those speeds are not immediately adjusted when the speed limit is changed.

Flitsmeister is one of the few apps that adjusts the speed almost immediately: in the night from Thursday to Friday, all speeds are automatically reduced from 130 or 120 to 100 kilometers per hour. The TomTom app will only receive an update on Monday that will process the new boards.

Navigation app Waze will not change anything in the near future, because the app cannot distinguish between different speeds at different times of the day. Google Maps is gradually adapting the signs. It is therefore possible that between those two moments, signs have been modified by Rijkswaterstaat that have not yet been processed by Google.
