Eindhoven Airport will start expanding the terminal at the end of this year, including a baggage cellar.

Eindhoven Airport is undergoing a transformation that will significantly increase the capacity and sustainability of the airport. With a go-ahead at the end of this year, the ambitious project to expand the terminal is scheduled to be completed in 2027. This expansion is a response to growing demand: no less than 2023 million passengers passed through the gates of Eindhoven Airport in 6,8, while the current facilities are designed for a capacity of 5 million passengers.

The construction project, which is being carried out by construction company Heijmans, involves an expansion of the terminal by approximately 10.000 square meters on the airside and 2.000 square meters on the landside. An important part of the expansion is the addition of a baggage cellar, which will contribute to faster and more efficient baggage handling. The design, a collaboration between EGM architects, Iv Bouw and Peutz, integrates the latest sustainability developments. After the expansion, the terminal will be completely gas-free and energy consumption will be largely covered by almost 1.100 solar panels on the roof of the new terminal.

The focus on sustainability is also evident from the reuse of materials, such as the facade parts from the existing terminal, and the use of two heat-cold storage installations for heating and cooling the terminal. Furthermore, the sedum planting on part of the roof contributes to water collection and insulation, and collected rainwater is reused for the toilets in the new terminal. All this underlines Eindhoven Airport's commitment to being a green and future-proof airport.

The construction of the extension will take approximately 2,5 years. This period is longer than initially anticipated, partly due to the addition of a baggage basement and the need to keep the airport operational during the work. The planning takes into account a planned temporary closure due to track works in 2027.

With the expansion of the terminal Eindhoven Airport not only increases capacity but also improves the passenger experience by offering more space for gates, catering, and the non-Schengen area. The larger arrival hall ensures that more flights can disembark at the same time, a crucial development since the decision to no longer operate scheduled flights after 23.00 p.m.

This project is an important step in realizing Eindhoven Airport's ambition to increase the quality and capacity of the airport, which will ultimately result in increased comfort for both travelers and employees.
