With the implementation of the hydrogen trains within this project, Alstom not only offers a sustainable alternative to traditional train transport, but also plays a crucial role in the development of sustainable infrastructure in the region.

The future of rail transport is taking a green turn in Europe, despite earlier reports of the alleged decline of hydrogen trains in Germany. The French industrial group Alstom is achieving a remarkable performance by winning new orders for its innovative hydrogen trains, especially in Italy.

Alstom recently announced two important orders received from Italy. In Lombardy, the transport company Ferrovie Nord Milano has placed an additional order for two Coradia Stream H trains, in addition to the six trains already ordered. This is part of a larger agreement that provides for the delivery of 14 trains in total. In the Puglia region, Alstom will supply two hydrogen trains to Ferrovie del Sud Est. These trains, which will replace the current diesel trains, mark the introduction of hydrogen trains in this region.

The project in Italy, which is supported by the European Union, revolves around the Coradia Stream, a regional train model. The hydrogen variant, referred to as 'H', is being developed and produced in Alstom's Italian factories. The company uses multiple locations, namely Savigliano for development, certification, production and testing and Vado Ligure for the equipment of the train set in which the advanced hydrogen technology is installed. Sesto San Giovanni will be the location for the production of components and Bologna for the development of the signaling system.

“We are extremely proud to deliver the first hydrogen trains in Puglia and to expand the fleet of hydrogen trains in Lombardy,” said an Alstom representative. “Alstom's unparalleled expertise in green traction solutions uniquely positions us to identify the best solutions for our customers, depending on their specific needs.”

The introduction of the hydrogen train in Italy marks an important milestone within the H2iseO Hydrogen Valley project.

This ambitious project is part of the Hy2Tech initiative within the IPCEI programme, funded by the European Union through the NextGenerationEU Fund. Alstom recently presented its progress and achievements during a conference on the IPCEI hydrogen project, held in Berlin in early December. positions itself with these developments Alstom firmly established itself as a forerunner in the transition to more sustainable rail transport in Europe, and illustrates the growing interest in hydrogen technology as an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional fuels in the transport sector.
