Due to the increase, the petrol price at the pump will certainly exceed 2 euros per litre.

The increase in excise duty on fuel, which will come into effect on 1 July 2023, can positively influence the sale of electric cars. High energy prices, which peaked in October last year, have already had a significant impact on electric vehicle sales, but the upcoming excise duty hike could further amplify this trend.

This measure marks the end of a temporary excise duty reduction that was introduced on April 1, 2022 in response to rising energy prices. With excise duty back at normal levels, prices at the pump will undoubtedly rise. This could give many people who are considering switching to electric driving the boost they need.

For petrol, the excise duty will rise to approximately 79 cents per litre, which means an increase of 13,8 cents. As a result, the price of petrol will certainly exceed 2 euros per litre. Excise duties on diesel and LPG are also being increased, with diesel going to about 52 cents per liter and LPG to 34 cents per kilo.

“High fuel prices influence consumer choice. The private driver just calculates, and if it doesn't fit, he won't do it," says a spokesperson for the national government. “These changes in fuel costs may prompt people to consider alternative modes of transportation, such as electric cars.”

These new excise duty rates will apply at least until the end of the year. However, there is the possibility that new rates will be introduced from 1 January 2024. Although these measures may be painful for the wallet, they could well be the impulse needed to send the Dutch people en masse to electric driving.

If you still want to benefit from the current, lower fuel prices before the price increase, it is better to be early. Crowds are expected at gas stations in the days leading up to July 1 as people try to fill their tanks before the higher rates take effect.
