In the spring of 2022, the municipality started renewing the tram tracks and stops in the Center and Scheveningen.
The work on the tram tracks and stops of tram line 16 (now tram 17) in the Center and Scheveningen is almost complete. This means that the route has been made suitable for the accessible low-floor trams. In some places along the route, the work has been combined with making streets and squares safer.
It is important that our Public Transport is accessible to everyone. Thanks to the introduction of the new low-floor trams, people with a wheelchair, rollator or pram can also board easily. That does not alter the fact that I know that the work has been accompanied by inconvenience for our residents and entrepreneurs. Unfortunately, this cannot be prevented, but as a municipality we must continue to communicate about the work and make the consequences clear."

The work was necessary to make the route suitable for the widely accessible R-Net trams. Now that the work has been completed, HTM can start testing the newly constructed tracks, overhead lines and halts. However, work on sidewalks and parking bays must be completed at various locations in the near future.
Public transport for everyone
To keep The Hague easily and attractively accessible, the Municipality of The Hague, the Rotterdam The Hague Metropolitan Area and HTM are working together on the public transport of the future. The new trams make traveling by public transport easier and more pleasant. Due to the low entry, travelers with a wheelchair, rollator and pram can get in and out without difficulty. This is how we make public transport available to everyone. The trams are also longer and more spacious than the red-beige trams. More passengers fit in the new trams and they sit more comfortably.
Tram will run the entire route this summer
The summer timetable will start on Saturday 8 July and then the tram will run the normal route from Wateringen via the Center to Scheveningen and vice versa. The test and trial operation will start on April 24 and must be successfully completed in order to start driving. For current routes, stops and departure times, see htm.nl.
Tram 6 and 12
The municipality of The Hague, HTM and the Metropolitan Region Rotterdam The Hague (MRDH) are working together on public transport that is in line with the increasing number of residents. They do this in the OV NEXT program, which includes the work on tram line 16. In this way, the region and the city remain accessible and liveable. OV Next is working on the public transport of the future: accessible to everyone, with short travel times and door-to-door transport. In mid-2025-2026, the municipality will also renew tram lines 6 and 12, according to the Municipality of The Hague.
