Last week's frost caused damage to the roads in various places in our country. For a week, our country looked like a winter sports resort, everything was covered with a white layer of snow. A lot of salt was sprinkled and a lot of kilometers were covered to make the roads well passable. Temperatures are rising again and the snow has disappeared. The frost has caused damage to the roads in various places in the Netherlands. Large holes have appeared here and there. This can create dangerous situations for road traffic. This frost damage to the roads causes traffic jams in various places in our country.

Rijkswaterstaat is busy with it and is doing everything it can to repair this frost damage by means of emergency repairs. The real repair work can only be done after the frost period. How does this frost damage actually occur? Frost damage occurs because rainwater sinks into the asphalt and then expands again in case of frost. The binder of asphalt becomes more brittle by frost and cold and causes cracks in the road surface. Water then freezes into these cracks and then expands again. As a result, pebbles become loose in the road surface and that can lead to holes, subsidence and fraying in the road surface. With many changes in temperatures above and below zero, the risk of damage is greater. Hopefully we will be free from the cold for the time being and we will soon be able to enjoy more pleasant temperatures.
