The motorcycle can once again look forward to a greatly increased interest as a means of transport. Not only in sales numbers, but also (and maybe even more) in rental. MotoShare, for example, recorded a growth of no less than 189 percent in rental days in 2020, which is also the best year so far. The growth of MotoShare as a whole was 2020 percent in 236.

With an increase in the total number of rental days from 6.300 to 11.900, motorcycle rental is on the rise. This is partly due to dealers who join the platform to arrange their rental easily and efficiently. But also the rental of private individuals ('Peer to Peer' or 'P2P') is still increasing in popularity. The turnover of private landlords also shows an enormous growth of no less than 144 percent.

Young motorcyclists
What is striking is the stamp that the younger motorcyclist puts on the results. They appear to have discovered the concept of renting. Whereas the center of gravity of the average age of the Dutch motorcyclist is still between 40 and 50 years, the largest group of renters (36 percent) at MotoShare is younger than thirty, closely followed by the 30 to 40-year-old age group (31 per cent).

Decrease in claims
The tenants can choose from a continuously growing range of more than 4.400 motorcycles at the end of 2020. A year earlier this was approximately 3.000 motorcycles. At the same time, Combi Motors Insurance (insurance partner in the Netherlands) reports that the number of reported claims has fallen by twenty percent. It is striking that, despite the significant growth in the number of rental days and the relatively young age of tenants, the number of claims has fallen.

Popular
In terms of brands, the top three is quite in line with the sales figures, by far the most popular is BMW, followed by Yamaha, with Kawasaki in third position. In terms of model, the BMW GS is clearly the most popular, which confirms the statement that many motorcycles are rented for the purpose of touring.

More than 30 percent of tenants indicate that they want to test a model with a view to purchase. In addition to monetization with demo engines through MotoShare this offers dealers more opportunities for sales. Because tenants have registered in advance, more data is available, including the intention to rent a motorcycle. This way a dealer knows in advance whether he is in contact with a potential buyer.

"Rental is a very good source of income for both private motorcycle owners and dealers. MotoShare proves that this can be done in a safe and efficient way within our ever-expanding community of motorcyclists. Next year we will roll out the platform even further in Europe, including for dealers. With 30 percent potential buyers and younger users, this is of course very interesting for both dealers and motorcycle brands!"
