The road tax or motor vehicle tax is an indirect tax that is levied in the Netherlands, among others, on the possession of a motor vehicle under 40 years of age. So it is a holding tax. According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, the provinces and the government together expect to receive 6,1 billion euros in road tax from motorists and motorcyclists in the new year (2021). This amount is almost the same as this year (2020). The road tax consists of 2 parts, one part for the government and one part for the provinces. The government expects to collect a total of 4,4 billion euros in road tax in the coming year, which is 0,6 percent less than the first estimate for 2020.

According to it CBS the baseline values for the 2020 estimate for government revenues have been adjusted downwards. This decrease is partly due to the negative consequences of the corona crisis. Fewer cars have been imported and therefore less sold and there are also more and more electric cars and no road tax is required for an electric car. The provinces expect to receive a total of 1,7 billion euros in road tax next year. This is an increase of 2,5 percent compared to this year. This increase can be explained by the fact that the rates (surcharges) are higher than this year. The provinces can determine this increase in the rates (surcharges) themselves. The number of cars does not develop the same in all provinces. This therefore creates significant differences between provinces.
