Even if the borders reopen in many holiday countries in July and August and there will be plenty of flights from Eindhoven, Rotterdam and Schiphol, the weekly flights of the airline TUI Nederland from Eelde to Gran Canaria will be canceled. It will be a peaceful and quiet summer for residents around Groningen Airport Eelde (GAE).

According to Petra Kok, spokeswoman for TUI, everything is dthe corona measures are still very uncertain. TUI will fly again from Schiphol in July, but also on a limited scale. She says that travelers will have the opportunity to rebook their holiday to another period or possibly fly via Schiphol this summer. If you do not want this, you will receive a voucher worth the down payment.

Airline Corendon announced this week that until October all return flights from Eelde to the Greek island of Crete and the Turkish resorts of Bodrum and Antalya will be canceled. Due to travel restrictions, Sunair is also forced to depart from Eelde to cancel Guernsey in any case in July. An airplane would fly from Sunair to the British island every Sunday until mid-August.

Foreign guests who want to go to the Canary Islands will only be welcome again from October, the president of the islands Ángel Víctor Torres said in El Mundo earlier. He wants to open the hotels to the locals from July. After that, people from other parts of Spain would also be welcome. Foreign tourists have to wait until the last quarter.

Remote tower technology

For Groningen Airport Eelde, the scrapping of the holiday flights this summer means a significant loss. After the charters and spring flights were canceled due to the coronation hazard, the airport is now also missing income during the busiest period of the year. From the end of 2021, physical air traffic control will move from Groningen Airport Eelde to Schiphol-East. LVNL uses remote tower technology for this. The innovation is carried out by LVNL, in close coordination with the airport.

Remote tower technology at Groningen Airport Eelde means that air traffic controllers are no longer physically present in the control tower at Groningen Airport Eelde, but in the remote tower center located in the LVNL building at Schiphol-East. The air traffic controller has a view of the airport grounds and the nearby airspace by means of cameras.

Via a mast with cameras at the airport, 360-degree images are continuously displayed via a live connection on screens in the remote tower center. Air traffic controllers supervise arriving and departing air traffic from this working position. The approach traffic control (aircraft that are not yet in sight of the air traffic controller) will also be done at Schiphol-East. Working with the cameras has no consequences for the flight operation.
