A taxi ride within Ghent suddenly turns out to be almost twice as expensive. The Ghent city council recently approved a price increase, but there was an error. As a result, payment must now also be made immediately when the taxi is stationary. It is the taxi drivers themselves who draw attention to this problem because they are not a requesting party.

“Last weekend, three customers called the police because their usual 8,5 euro trip now suddenly costs almost twice as much,” say the taxi drivers who sound the alarm at Alderman for Mobility Filip Watteeuw.

Filip Watteeuw (Green) says, according to The latest News, that he has the situation will study. Now the taxi drivers mainly want to warn their customers about the rate increase. Ghent has had a unique way of calculating taxi rates for many years. For a short ride within Ghent one pays 8,5 euros as standard. For a night ride that is 11 euros.

The city now advises all taxi drivers not to have the new rates installed on their so-called taxi meter for the time being. The period to get settled was extended by a month to April 30. In the meantime, there may be several rates in force for a ride in Ghent. If you take a taxi, it is best to inform in advance what it will cost.
