In 2019, 3.354 additional bicycle parking places were installed in Ghent. That is almost double compared to how many were added in 2018. More orphan bicycles were also collected in 2019 (4.298) and more temporary bicycle sheds were installed (52.456) than the year before.
Bicycle shed 100 meters from each house
In 2019, De Fietsambassade placed 3.354 new bicycle parking spaces in Ghent. This almost doubled the number of places created in 2018. To promote bicycles as a means of transport and to meet the ever-growing number of cyclists, the City of Ghent is committed to providing bicycle parking facilities 100 meters from each house.
Mainly new bicycle parking places have been realized in the Sint-Elisabethbegijnhof, the student area, Muide-Meulestede and the historic center. In 2019, De Fietsambassade also installed 52.456 temporary bicycle parking spaces. That is an increase of 50% compared to the previous year.
More orphan bikes
To ensure that the Ghent bicycle parking In order to be optimally utilized, the Fietsambassade collected a total of 2019 orphan bicycles in 4.298. Flat tires, dust on the saddle or rusted chains are signs that a bicycle has not been used for a while. Then he will be taken to the bicycle depot of De Fietsambassade at 191 Maaltebruggestraat. The owner can pick up the bicycle there for free.
The Fietsambassade Gent was founded by the City of Ghent and Ghent higher education institutions: Artevelde Hogeschool, Hogeschool Gent, LUCA School of Arts, KU Leuven, Odisee Hogeschool and Ghent University.
Innovative test projects
The City of Ghent wants the increasing number of cyclists to park their bicycles safely and comfortably. The Fietsambassade is also committed to providing sufficient and high-quality bicycle parking places in the coming years. This is done together with the Mobility Company and other city services. A number of innovative test projects are also being developed around bicycle parking to help realize the ambitions of the City of Ghent as a bicycle city.
