This year, 49 cities and municipalities in Flanders are organizing a Car Free Sunday. For the very first time, all 13 Flemish central cities are also participating. More than 2 million Flemish people can enjoy a day of car rest and streets full of activities with space for people. The vacant space is enthusiastically taken over by countless local initiatives, neighborhood parties, open-air festivals, entertainment and information stands.

Where cars disappear, people appear. Logical, because a day without a king's car simply pleases the ears, the lungs and the heart. Recent research shows that the health effects of air pollution are much more serious than previously thought.

Air pollution causes 800.000 premature deaths annually in Europe only. A Car-Free Sunday is the ideal opportunity to test sustainable means of transport, such as electric bicycles, e-scooters and learn more about partial mobility and public transport. For example, Blue-Bike will lower its rates on September 22 this year and borrowing a Blue-Bike at all locations costs only € 1,15 for a ride of up to 24 hours.

Car-Free Sunday is also established outside Flanders tradition. For example, on Sunday 22 September 2019, the entire Brussels territory will be made car-free from 10 am to 19 pm. As a final chord of Mobility Week, car-free Sundays will be organized across Europe on 22 September.

The main highlights this year are Paris, the largest car-free zone for one day in the world, and London with its first car-free Sunday ever.
