The public transport chip card may disappear in 2023. According to State Secretary Van Veldhoven, the technology is due for replacement. In a letter to carriers and other authorities, she writes that the ease of use of the card is appreciated by travelers, but that a more contemporary system is preferred. Moreover, the public transport chip card is relatively expensive, the State Secretary emphasizes.

The Dutch government wants to phase out the public transport chip card in 2023

Van Veldhoven wants to move to a system where the travel balance is no longer kept on an OV chip card, but where the traveler chooses whether he wants to pay, for example, via a bank card or mobile phone. The balance is then kept at a central point.

The State Secretary emphasizes that anonymous travel, i.e. without an account, will continue to be possible in the future. Various tests have already been carried out with new methods and experiments are still ongoing.

Van Veldhoven hopes that the new payment methods can be introduced within two years. If the new system is sufficient, the OV chip card could be abolished two years later, i.e. in 2023.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Infrastructure says that the latter only happens if all kinds of conditions are met. "Then it really has to be demonstrated that it benefits the traveler."
