A handful of negative experiences should not overshadow the entire sector.

At a time when online shopping has reached an unprecedented level, parcel delivery is an indispensable link in the supply chain. However, the rush and rush that go hand in hand with this often lead to major nuisance in residential areas and the city centre.

Young drivers sometimes don't seem to care about traffic rules and standards. Arrogant and hastily they park their vans in random places, even though suitable parking spaces are available. This not only annoys other road users, but also causes potentially dangerous traffic situations. This image is further reinforced when drivers run a red light, drive too fast, or even continue their route with a loose seatbelt.

On the other hand, parcel deliverers indicate that they often have limited options when it comes to parking. In busy cities there is a shortage of loading and unloading places, forcing them to act quickly. Moreover, they experience little patience and respect from other road users. A handful of negative experiences should not overshadow the entire sector. It is therefore crucial for companies to share positive stories and experiences and recognize and appreciate the hard work of their drivers.

Nevertheless, PostNL in Ghent shows that things can be done differently. Here, parcels are delivered in an environmentally friendly and respectful way in the city center, which certainly sets an example for other delivery services. It is necessary for delivery services to work closely with municipalities to improve the infrastructure. This can be done, for example, by creating specific loading and unloading zones in busy areas and setting time windows within which deliveries may take place. As a result, traffic congestion and nuisance during peak hours can be reduced.

Collection points could solve part of the problem, but given the growing volume of parcels, the logistical challenge remains. Expanding collection points and encouraging customers to use them can reduce the pressure on residential areas and inner cities.

Modern technology can also play an important role in addressing these issues. Many companies already use route optimization software to increase efficiency and reduce time on the road. Smart parking solutions, such as apps that show available parking spaces in real time, can also help delivery drivers make better parking decisions.

The increasing number of parcel deliveries requires a coordinated approach in which respect, safety and efficiency are central. While companies such as PostNL lead the way, it remains essential to find the balance between efficient delivery and respecting the quality of life in our streets and neighbourhoods.
