A cruise undoubtedly offers an unforgettable experience, but at what cost?

When the Verhulst family, famous from the reality show 'De Verhulstjes', travels around the world, we like to follow them. This time, in their new season, we as viewers sail along on a seven-day cruise from Kiel through the enchanting fjords of Norway. A breathtaking journey, but we have to ask ourselves: what is the environmental price?

The adventure begins in the German port of Kiel, after which the family sails to Copenhagen. From the Danish capital they explore the majestic Norwegian fjords in Hellesylt, Ålesund and Flåm. Fjords are synonymous with Norway, a spectacular scene of untouched nature. It is not for nothing that cruises to these areas are extremely popular.

The Verhulstjes are going to the Norwegian Fjords for the fifth season of the Play4 program of the same name.

Named after the eponymous Greek goddess of the sea, MSC Euribia is part of MSC Cruises' popular Meraviglia Plus class of ships. As the first ship in the fleet, it is visually distinguished from the other ships by the painting of the hull. Under the motto #SaveTheSea, a signal is sent for the protection of the oceans.

A cruise undoubtedly offers an unforgettable experience, but at what cost? Norway's awe-inspiring nature deserves protection, and it's every traveler's responsibility – and yes, that includes us, the fans of 'De Verhulstjes' – to choose more sustainable forms of travel.

environmental friendliness

The ship on which the Verhulstjes make the journey has LNG propulsion, an advanced wastewater treatment system, waste recycling and energy-saving heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems all ensure less pollution. The MSC Euribia is equipped with the latest environmental technology to enable eco-friendly travel. The painting is not only intended to visually represent part of the ecosystem, but also to emphasize its environmental friendliness. With a length of 331 meters, the new ship is one of the giants of the ocean and can accommodate up to 6.327 guests.

alternatives

As viewers, we need to be aware of the impact our travel choices can have. It is essential to choose responsible, sustainable travel options that respect our planet. Let's enjoy the spectacular nature the world has to offer, but let's also ensure that future generations can do the same. As a holidaymaker, also look at alternatives.

Norway - Flåm Railway

But not only the cruise deserves attention in Norway, the Flåm Railway is also a journey in itself. This 20 kilometer long track, a branch of the Bergen Railway, leads travelers through one of the steepest train routes in the world. The railway winds through hairpin bends, 20 tunnels - 18 of which are hand-carved - and offers mesmerizing views of the surrounding nature with waterfalls, snow-capped peaks and remote farms. All this is undoubtedly a beautiful spectacle that inspires many viewers to embark on a similar journey.

travel choices

Although traveling by boat or train is slower than flying, the impact on the environment is considerably less. The problem, however, lies with the cruise ships. These gigantic floating cities are known for their high emissions of harmful gases, such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide. The recent introduction of stricter environmental regulations in the Norwegian fjords is a step in the right direction, but the question is whether this is enough. From 2023, stricter emission requirements will apply to cruise ships visiting the fjords, with the ultimate goal of having completely emission-free fjords by 2026. While this is a noble endeavor, it is clear that these regulations do not yet fully address the actual impact of cruise ships on the environment.
