The cut on the Weesperstraat is part of a trial that will last six weeks.

The VVD has asked for an urgent debate regarding the closure of Weesperstraat to traffic. “The measure is too far-reaching to continue,” says VVD councilor Daan Wijnants in his application. This request is supported by Denk, JA21, SP, CDA, FvD and Lijst Kabamba.

Opinions differ. Opponents, mainly taxi drivers, have been protesting against this 'cut' for some time and make their voices heard on Twitter every day. Alderman Melanie van der Horst (D66), responsible for Traffic, transport and air quality, Public space and greenery, Water, Approach North, also receives support for the plan. “We don't need through traffic through the city. I think it's a great plan! Let's cut it, also Kattenburg, and let those taxi drivers complain. The Weesperstraat is now much more livable, what a relief!”

additional transport

The entire Amsterdam opposition has called on the alderman to exclude additional public transport from the cut at Weesperstraat. “Accessibility for the elderly and people with disabilities is severely limited.”

“This is no longer tenable,” all Amsterdam opposition parties write in a letter to the council. Although emergency services and regular public transport are excluded from the 'cut', this does not apply to additional public transport.

The cut on the Weesperstraat is part of a trial that will last six weeks. During that period, the Weesperstraat will be closed with barriers during the day between Nieuwe Herengracht and Nieuwe Keizersgracht. The street is accessible between 23.00:06.00 and XNUMX:XNUMX.
