The Royal train will retire this year.

You may soon find yourself in the same carriage of the King on your daily commute, as the Royal carriage travels abroad for the last time this week. According to the Government Information Service (RVD), King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima will use the standard trains and timetable of the Netherlands in the future.

This remarkable news came at the same time as the announcement that the royal couple will use the Royal Train for the last time during the upcoming state visit to Belgium, from 20 to 22 June. As a reminder, during the state visit of Belgium to the Netherlands in 2016, Queen Máxima and Queen Mathilde of Belgium also used the Royal train, in honor of the opening of the then completely renovated Utrecht Central station.

The current Royal Carriage, the SR10, will be offered to the Railway Museum by the Dutch Railways (NS). This means that despite the retirement from the train, the historical heritage of the Royal Train will continue to exist and be accessible to the public.
