The bicycle highway F423 follows the old railway embankment between Eeklo and Zelzate on railway line 55A, the name of both an existing and a historic Belgian railway line. It is a remnant of the original route of railway line 55.

A long-awaited and special project, the F423 bicycle highway that connects Eeklo and Zelzate, is nearing completion. The promise of more efficient, safer and more sustainable transport is now within reach for the residents of Assenede, Kaprijke and surrounding municipalities.

The work on the last section of the route, between Assenede and Kaprijke, are progressing well and are in the final phase. The final top layer of the path will be poured on Thursday and Friday. Although the temptation may be great, the engineers ask not to tread on the fresh asphalt yet. The project, which has been carried out in several phases, is an impressive example of collaboration and dedication.

history

The idea of the F423 bicycle highway dates back to the early 2010s, when the Flemish Region decided to improve mobility in the region. The highway would fill a missing link in the regional cycling network, creating an important connection between Eeklo, Assenede, Kaprijke and Zelzate.

The Province already obtained a permit for the construction of the bicycle highway in 2018. A few local residents and agricultural companies that are active on the plots along the route of the bicycle highway have lodged an appeal. The then Minister for the Environment granted the permit with a number of additional conditions on appeal. However, the minister was called back by the Council for Permit Disputes at the end of 2020, and had to do her homework again.

The initial plan for the F423 was announced in 2014 and the first section of the highway, between Eeklo and Assenede, was completed in 2017. However, the project was delayed by some obstacles, including land ownership issues and engineering challenges. This led to some frustration among the local population, who eagerly awaited the completion of the project.

The almost completed bicycle highway F423 between Eeklo and Zelzate is an important step towards a more sustainable, healthier and more connected region. After years of planning, consultation and construction work, the end of this long-awaited project is finally in sight.

Now, after years of efforts and investments, the end of the project is in sight. The highway, which runs through scenic countryside and past local highlights, offers cyclists a safe and pleasant route between the cities. This will not only facilitate commuting for the local population, but also promote tourism and recreation.
