Brussels Airport received more than 1,7 million passengers in June, an increase of 168% compared to June 2021 and 72% of the number of passengers in 2019, before the Covid crisis. Brussels Airport is therefore continuing its momentum, as this is already the best monthly result since the start of the crisis in March 2020. With regard to freight transport, volumes show a decrease compared to last year (-12%), but an increase of 23% compared to 2019.

Passenger traffic: an increase of 168%.

In June, Brussels Airport received 1.733.933 passengers, an increase of 168% compared to June 2021, but also a decrease of 28% compared to June 2019, before the crisis. In absolute numbers, this again represents the best result since the start of the Covid crisis. Passenger numbers could have been even higher without the various industrial action the airport faced in the week of June 20. In addition, several airlines occasionally had to cancel a flight due to capacity problems in European airports.

The number of departing passengers is higher than the number of arriving passengers because many people already left on vacation in the last days of June. The number of departing transfer passengers is 14,5%, which is 3 percentage points lower than the percentage in 2019 due to the strong recovery of local traffic and the reduction in the number of transfers, especially in Europe.

The top 10 most visited countries in June from Brussels Airport are Spain, Italy, Germany, Turkey, Greece, Portugal, the United States, France, the United Kingdom and Morocco, respectively. The ten most popular destinations in June were Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon, Rome, Milan, London, Istanbul, Vienna, Malaga and Frankfurt.

Freight: decrease in total volume by 12%

Cargo transport at Brussels Airport decreased by 12% in June compared to June 2021. Air cargo volumes also decreased by 12%. The full-cargo segment recorded a 15% decline, while cargo on board passenger flights increased by 22% due to the increase in passenger flights.

Express services recorded a 19% decline due to the slowdown in the growth of the e-commerce market in Western Europe and the temporary reassignment of certain flights to other airports. In addition, trucked air freight volumes also decreased by 15%.

As in previous months, Asia is the major import and export region. Africa is the second import region and the third export region and shows growth in both segments compared to last year. North America is the third import region and the second export region.

Flights

The total number of flight movements in June 2022 has increased by 69% compared to 2021, to 16.111 flight movements (compared to 20.895 in 2019). The number of passenger flights increased sharply by 105% compared to 2021 and represents 69% of the number of passenger flights in June 2019.
