Seventeen organizations* are calling on the new Cabinet to make rural areas more accessible for holidaymakers. The past corona year has shown how important it is to go out. The pressure on urban greenery was therefore great and sometimes parts of protected nature reserves had to be closed off.

That is why both land management and recreational organizations and land users have found each other in the mission to turn the 'outdoor space' into a recreational space where possible, desirable and on a voluntary basis. The seventeen organizations that work together under the NLBuiten flag want to draw up a concrete plan for this together with the central government and other governments this year.

The NLBuiten organizations are working on a proposal to make the rural areas more accessible for everyone who wants to go out: walkers, cyclists, horse riders, water sports enthusiasts, etc. Landowners, land users and site managers are collaborating on the plan, which requires liability, compensation, properly arrange financing of facilities, respect for property, voluntary participation of farmers and horticulturists and possible claims settlement. This is a new form of public-private partnership that requires the involvement of central government, provinces, municipalities and water boards.

This initiative is in line with the finding of informateur Hamer in her final report:
“During the corona crisis, it has become extra visible how important recreation, cultural experience and sports and exercise are. They form, as it were, the connective tissue of society, not only in a social and mental sense, but also economically, there is often a chain of activity around these sectors.”

More kilometers of walking, cycling and sailing pleasure

Although the lockdown has made the shortage of recreational space in and outside cities even more visible, the problem of great recreational pressure has been going on for much longer. As a result, natural areas are under pressure. NLBuiten strives to ensure that holidaymakers can enjoy many more kilometers of walking, cycling and sailing pleasure close to home, according to the ANWB.
