Flemish Minister of Mobility and Public Works Lydia Peeters today opens two fast charging stations along Flemish highways. This concerns two of a total of thirteen fast charging stations that Fastned is rolling out as part of the European BENEFIC project. Several stations from this program are currently under construction. In the first 6 months of 2021, Belgium already added 22.500 new electric cars, an increase of 57% compared to the same period last year (14.300).

“The charging stations are in line with my mission to support the realization of high-quality charging infrastructure along important highways in Flanders and are crucial to supply the rapidly growing number of electric vehicles in the country”

The charging stations are located on both sides of the E19 at the Peutie Oost and West highway car parks between Antwerp and Brussels. Here, electric drivers can quickly charge up to a range of 300 km in 30 minutes with electricity from the sun and wind. According to Peeters, we in Flanders face far-reaching social, economic, technological and climatic challenges that will greatly change our mobility and travel behaviour. That is why it has released 2025 million euros to roll out 35.000 charging stations by XNUMX. Charging infrastructure along the Flemish motorways gives drivers of electric cars the confidence to always be able to charge nearby and thus stimulate the transition to zero-emission cars. The two fast charging stations at the highway car parks in Peutie are the result of a great collaboration between Fastned, AWV and BENEFIC.

“Obtaining good locations is crucial for the construction of high-quality charging infrastructure. The collaboration with AWV and BENEFIC is a good example of how the government can help with the realization of charging infrastructure by making locations along the highway available. We are very pleased that we now have the first two locations operational along the Flemish highway. With the growing European network, we are making it increasingly easier for people to switch to an electric car.”

Charging at Fastned costs 59 cents per kilowatt hour (incl. VAT) and 35 cents per kilowatt hour with a subscription. Electric drivers can pay in various ways, including credit cards, debit cards, charging cards and via the Fastned App.

Fastned's mission is to accelerate the transition to sustainable mobility by giving electric drivers freedom. Fastned does this by building fast charging stations where electric cars can charge super fast. Since its foundation in 2012, Fastned has built 145 fast charging stations in the Netherlands, Germany, the United Kingdom, Belgium and Switzerland. In addition, Fastned will start building the first fast charging stations along major highways in France this year, for which it won a tender last year. Last week Fastned also announced a collaboration with the West Flemish Intermunicipal Service for the realization of five charging stations along main roads in Flanders.

BENEFIC

This initiative was made possible thanks to the support of the BENEFICproject, which is part of the European program “Connecting Europe Facility“, funded by the European Commission.
