The number of speed pedelecs in our country has increased again this year and has even doubled in 3 years. What exactly is a speed pedelec? A speed pedelec or speed bike is the powerful version of the e-bike. The top speed of this mode of transport is approximately 45 kilometers per hour, and you may only drive it on the roadway or moped paths, not on the cycle path. Speed bikes are also on average more expensive than e-bikes. They are especially interesting for people who live more than 15 km from work and still want to go by bike instead of by car. Since 1 January 2017, the speed pedelec is officially a moped due to its speed and the bicycle must have a moped registration plate. Wearing a special helmet is also mandatory on this fast bike.

The CBS reported that there were 1 thousand speed pedelecs on the road in the Netherlands on 2020 July 21,1. This is an increase of 23 percent compared to the previous year, when the Netherlands had 17,2 thousand speed pedelecs, and almost doubled compared to three years ago. Of the total of 21,1 thousand speed pedelecs, 2020 thousand were purchased in the first half of 3,3. According to Statistics Netherlands, the corona crisis had no influence on the purchase figures. The speed pedelec also appears to be very popular among the 45 to 65 year olds, this age group has the most in our country.
