Corona has stopped tourism for many months. Travel companies, airlines, accommodations, local destinations; the world of travel is now trying to do everything it can to get tourism - and thus their economies - up and running for many countries. By working on a responsible recovery, the travel sector has now also launched the initiative to reduce plastic waste in holiday destinations worldwide.

Travel dome ANVR has joined forces with foreign travel industry organizations, destination organizations, tourism companies and NGOs and formally supported this 'plastic initiative'. The ANVR wants to work with its affiliated travel organizations to remove unnecessary plastic materials during the trip and to focus on reuse, recycling and composting.
For example, it is unknown to many that discarded plastic gloves and masks spread more germs than they prevent. And that filtering, bottling and serving on-site is probably more hygienic than single-use plastic bottles. And there are many other examples.

Frank Oostdam, chairman of ANVR: 'We have to protect the beautiful places on which we all depend. Unfortunately, disposable plastics are a major problem all over the world. It is too big for a single organization to solve this on its own. That is why it is good that we work together in this. Changes need to take place throughout the tourism chain, which is why we are committed to this initiative. Only together can we make a difference '.

The UNWTO (World Tourism Organization), together with the United Nations Environment Program and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, has already launched this 'Global Tourism Plastics Initiative' (GTPI). Subsequently, this Dutch 'Plastic Pledge' was signed by more than 180 ANVR travel organizations and other tourist companies. Together with MVO Nederland, CELTH, Green Destinations and Travelife, and many tourism companies, we are now working on concrete goals and a vision for the future. In this way, the travel industry wants to ensure that disposable plastic no longer occurs in a journey consisting of transport, accommodation and entertainment.
