Bol.com announced that this year compared to last year they will ship twice as many items to customers without a cardboard shipping box. With this Bol.com wants to save on packaging materials and they want to reduce their own CO2 emissions. In 2019, the company already started shipping 3,5 million items without a cardboard box. They are expected to stop shipping about 2020 million items in a cardboard box by 7. It will still be shipped in a cardboard box if this is necessary for protection of the article, for example. Currently, 20 percent of Bol.com's CO-2 emissions come from packaging.

"From a sustainability point of view, we don't want to send unnecessary packaging," explains Jori EBskamp, CSR lead at bol.com, out. “And the same goes for the filling material that goes into those cardboard boxes. That is why in 2019 we started to no longer pack items such as fans, deep fryers, irons, printers, coffee makers and diapers. The own packaging of these items is sturdy enough for transport from our warehouse to the front door of the customer. We only stick a shipping label on that. ”

By reducing packaging materials, Bol.com strives for climate-neutral shopping in 2025. The ultimate goal of them is 0 grams of CO2 emissions per package. They have recently done a lot of research and critically looked at what can be sent without a Bol.com box. This information is also discussed with suppliers and sales partners, so that they are also encouraged and can adjust their 'packaging policy'. This allows them to ship more items without a cardboard box every year.

Bol.com already ships 75 percent of their items with no padding in the box. Bol.com was already earlier this year stopped with the sale of disposable plastic items. With this they hope to save 500 kilos of plastic per year. Bol.com is also working with delivery company PostNL on further sustainability. PostNL is greening their vans by choosing electric or green gas. More than 700 green gas vans are already driving around, among other things for the delivery of bol.com packages. Bol.com will also test two-hour deliveries with bicycle couriers.
