With ride sharing apps like Uber and Lyft, you may be wondering where in the world it is still possible to take a cheap taxi. Taxis have not disappeared and in many countries people still rely heavily on the services of taxi drivers.

It should be borne in mind that where there are cheap taxis, there is often a comparable competitive ride on public transport. A look at the cheapest countries for taxis could also provide some insight into where to use the taxi but we prefer to focus on the most expensive places for a taxi where one can consider relying only on public transport.

Switzerland leader, the Netherlands and Belgium also score high.

The countries where the most expensive rates are charged by far are Switzerland with the lead, Japan, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, New Zealand, Great Britain, France and Sweden.

In short, this means that most Western European countries plus Japan do not have cheap taxis. Although our tables do not include US data, similar taxi price reports have come to roughly the same conclusion about taxi prices around the world in recent years.

Be careful with all those price comparisons.

We should always be careful when comparing costs by country as the relative taxi costs are often different and may not affect your choice of destination but they do affect your choice to move to a destination you are visiting .

On the other hand, it is also a good idea to stick to trams, subways, and suburban rail links in Western Europe and Japan. They are often very good and cheaper than a taxi ride due to the short distances.
