The future on wheels requires changes in regulations for mopeds and drones at the start of the new year.

The past weekly overview highlights various developments in the Netherlands, with a focus on safety, technology and sustainability. The growing popularity of electric cars has led to... new challenges in fire safety, especially in parking garages.

The Dutch government has determined in the new building decree that parking garages larger than 1000 square meters, especially those under homes, must now be equipped with automatic fire extinguishing systems. This decision follows incidents such as the Fremantle Highway ship fire, where electric cars in car parks pose an increased risk.

Curaçao has taxi drivers responded positively to the government's announcement to modernize outdated passenger transport legislation. The new regulations will provide taxi drivers with more opportunities to develop and expand their business, benefiting the island's growing tourism industry.

Changes are also coming in the regulations around special mopeds and drones. From 2024, the Road Traffic Department (RDW) will be responsible for the admission of special mopeds. New rules for drones will be in line with European standards, with safety and reliability central.

Road safety remains a concern, as evidenced by a study from the traffic institute Vias. Their analysis shows that a large proportion of motorists drive unsafely close together, especially during weekdays and in lighter conditions.

In cities such as Amsterdam there are enforcers more powers to take action against minor traffic violations by cyclists and pedestrians. This is part of a wider drive for road safety in increasingly busy urban areas.

Sustainability in train transport is also gaining attention, with Alstom's hydrogen trains deployed in Italy. This underlines the ongoing efforts for sustainable and innovative transport solutions.
