The CBR is always busy to ensure that everyone can safely participate in traffic. They ensure a mobile and traffic-safe Netherlands. With that goal in mind, they ensure that traffic exams are taken, but they also test whether drivers are physically and mentally capable of participating in traffic safely. The CBR carries out these tasks on behalf of the Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management. The CBR starts a number of campaigns every year, now they are starting a social media campaign aimed specifically at young people. The campaign aims to raise awareness among young people about safe driving behaviour.
Two new educational measures have recently been introduced, the short course on behavior and traffic and the course on drugs and traffic. Every year, 1 million breath or saliva tests are taken by the police and more than 3500 people are arrested monthly who are behind the wheel under the influence of drugs or alcohol. It is estimated that 75 to 150 people die every year due to drug and/or alcohol use in traffic. Often it is not the driver himself, but someone in the area who is hit. Young drivers who have had their driving license for less than five years cause a large proportion of these accidents.
With this new campaign, the CBR wants to make it clear to young people what drugs and alcohol can cause in traffic and dangerous driving. Certain rules should also be made clear, How much can you actually drink? How long do drugs and alcohol stay in your blood? The campaign should make young people realize what they can actually lose by getting behind the wheel with alcohol or drugs. Losing your driver's license, getting a criminal record, high fines, high damage costs, having to follow a course but also having to live with the consequences if you hit someone are part of this. The campaign runs through YouTube, Snapchat, TikTok and Instagram.
