ProRail has announced that it will stop using the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, as of January 1, 2025.
The railway company states that the decision was taken due to a shift in the dynamics on the platform, which no longer aligns with the core values of respectful and valuable communication that ProRail strives for.
In a statement on its own website, ProRail explains the decision: “We have chosen to leave X because we do not want to contribute to a platform where hateful content and fake news are circulated unchecked.” The company emphasizes that it is important to stay in touch with travelers, residents and journalists via safe and constructive channels.
alternative platforms
Although ProRail is saying goodbye to X, it will remain active on other social media platforms, including LinkedIn, Instagram, Threads, Facebook and YouTube. The rail company will provide webcare via these channels on weekdays between 9.00:17.00 and XNUMX:XNUMX. In addition, it will remain possible to contact us by telephone in case of emergencies.
In their response, ProRail also makes it clear that the choice for social media channels is carefully considered. For example, it was previously decided not to use TikTok due to concerns about privacy and security risks. The company states that it is closely monitoring developments at other platforms, such as Meta (the owner of Facebook and Instagram).

X’s decision to leave isn’t entirely unexpected. Once praised for its accessibility and rapid interaction, the platform has come under increasing scrutiny in recent years. Since Elon Musk took over in 2022, X has faced declining user numbers, increased hate speech, and looser moderation, prompting many companies, governments, and public bodies to reconsider their presence on the platform.
What is striking is that ProRail departure of X does not combine with the switch to alternative platforms such as Bluesky. This platform, founded by one of the co-founders of Twitter, is praised by some as a sanctuary for hate-free communication. However, ProRail seems to prefer existing channels and to pursue a cautious policy when entering new social media platforms.
reputation versus reach
The decision to discontinue the use of X can be seen as a strategic decision to protect ProRail's reputation. By distancing itself from a platform associated with controversial content, the company underlines its commitment to a safe and respectful communication environment. At the same time, it raises questions about reaching users who do remain active on X. According to ProRail, this step is necessary to safeguard its own values. "We would like to continue to talk to our supporters, but not at any price," the organization states.
