The presentation of these new FLIRT Akku trains at InnoTrans is a clear signal that the future of railways in Germany will be green.

Stadler’s Flinke, Leichte, Innovative Regional-Triebzug (FLIRT) is already a great success worldwide, with more than 2.500 vehicles sold. At InnoTrans 2024 last Thursday, Stadler presented a new battery-electric variant of this popular train, an important step towards CO2-free mobility. Deutsche Bahn is showing one of the 44 new vehicles that will soon be in service in the southwestern Palatinate network in Germany.

The order of these FLIRT Akku trains by DB Regio marks a milestone for regional transport in the Palatinate. The current diesel trains still operating in the network will gradually be replaced by these modern, emission-free trains. The project is led by the Zweckverband ÖPNV Rheinland-Pfalz Süd, while the states of Baden-Württemberg and Saarland are also involved as important partners in the implementation.

FLIRT Battery

The technical concept of the FLIRT Akku is highly innovative and makes smart use of the existing electrical infrastructure. On electrified routes, the train functions as a conventional electric train and simultaneously charges its traction batteries. Another smart aspect is the regenerative braking technology, where every braking action helps to recover energy and store it in the batteries. When the overhead line ends, the FLIRT Akku continues to run on battery power without any problems. With a range of at least 80 kilometers in battery mode, plus an operational reserve, the train is ideally suited for regions where not all tracks are electrified.

The technical specifications of this new train are impressive.

The FLIRT Akku can reach speeds of up to 140 km/h and is equipped with an air suspension chassis for extra ride comfort. At 55,5 meters long, the two-part train is slightly longer than previous FLIRT models, which ensures optimal passenger capacity. The train has room for 325 passengers, of which 172 can be seated. The train is also fully air-conditioned, has free Wi-Fi and spacious multi-purpose areas at each entrance. A striking addition is the lounge behind one of the two driver's cabins, which adds a new dimension to travel comfort.

The introduction of this new generation of trains in the Palatinate network is an important step towards environmentally friendly mobility in Germany. The involved states of Rhineland-Palatinate, Baden-Württemberg and Saarland are sending out a strong signal for sustainable transport solutions. With the increasing electrification of the railways and the use of the FLIRT Akku trains, this region will serve as an example for other areas in both Germany and Europe in the coming years.

Innotrans

On 26 September 2024, the FLIRT Akku was officially presented at InnoTrans, where DB Regio is showing this new vehicle to a wider audience for the first time. Visitors can take a closer look at the train on track T10/40 and experience the innovative technology and modern comfort that this new train offers.

With the FLIRT Akku, Stadler is not only providing an environmentally friendly solution for regional rail transport, but is also demonstrating that the future of railways will revolve around innovative and sustainable technologies. The fact that the trains can be used on existing routes without major modifications makes this model particularly attractive for regions that are still dependent on diesel trains. The combination of battery and overhead line operation offers a flexible and cost-efficient solution that will further increase the appeal of public transport.
