Through stricter enforcement and financial support, authorities hope to bring about positive change in the taxi industry, allowing both locals and tourists to benefit from a reliable and efficient taxi service.

Taxi drivers in Morocco who refuse to take passengers to their desired destinations will soon face severe penalties. According to the reporting of the internet magazine bladna.nl, these measures will consist of hefty fines and even the seizure of vehicles.

The new regulations, which are expected to come into effect on August 20, are intended to improve the quality of public transport and protect the rights of consumers. Fines can reach hundreds of dirhams and cars can be confiscated for a minimum of 15 days. The authorities hope to improve discipline and compliance with laws and regulations in the taxi sector.

There are a growing number of complaints from passengers about drivers refusing short journeys. Especially in Marrakech, many Moroccans complain about the behavior of taxi drivers. These drivers are said to prefer foreign customers and Moroccan passengers ignore or even refuse. During busy tourist periods, taxi drivers often ignore local customers to serve tourists. These new measures are a direct response to these complaints.

The Ministry of the Interior has also announced that a program has been launched for the renewal of large-format taxis. This program is part of broader measures aimed at developing and improving the taxi service and supporting professionals in this sector.

According to a statement from the ministry, a financial subsidy of 80.000 dirhams per large-format taxi will be granted, provided the required conditions are met. These taxis will be permanently withdrawn from service and replaced by new vehicles that meet the required safety and comfort standards for transporting the permitted number of passengers.

The subsidy will be paid directly to the beneficiaries through authorized dealers of the new cars, as a contribution to financing their purchase. This support program aims to improve the quality of services for users of this type of public transport, as well as the working conditions and incomes of professionals in this sector. The aim is to encourage them to purchase new taxis that consume less fuel and better meet the requirements of road safety, passenger comfort and environmental conservation.

The ministry emphasizes that to achieve these goals, procedures have been simplified and all necessary measures have been taken to speed up the processing of subsidy applications. Owners of large-format taxis can submit their applications to the competent services in the various provinces and regions until October 30, 2015. The new regulations and the renewal program arise from a broader effort by the Moroccan government to improve the quality of public transport and increase customer satisfaction.
