Alderman Van der Horst hopes that the use of public transport will continue to increase as a result of this action.

From the summer holidays, all Amsterdam children aged 4 to 11 can travel for free on GVB buses, trams and metros for more than four months. This campaign will make public transport more accessible and affordable for Amsterdam families. Last year, the city council released 1 million euros to allow children to travel for free on Saturdays, but it turned out to be possible to significantly increase the number of days. The travel product can be requested from 1 July and placed on a personal OV chip card.

Support is arranged for people who are not very familiar with applying for a public transport card and subscription online. The team that normally handles applications for free public transport for state pensioners will be deployed to process the applications from 1 July.

“There are so many families for whom it is not obvious to travel outside their own neighborhood and through the city. I hope this action gives them a nice summer holiday and gives them the opportunity to broaden their horizons. After that, the subscription will continue for another three months. So I hope everyone takes advantage of this great promotion. And if you need some extra help with the application, we will help you with that.”

Van der Horst hopes that the use of public transport will continue to increase as a result of this action: “It would be great if more people found their way back to public transport. Passenger numbers are still not back to the old level and we are working hard to keep the network up to standard. It would of course help enormously if more people used the trams, metros and buses again.”
