The Flemish Agency for Roads and Traffic applies its own guidelines and uses the language of the destination to indicate cities on signposts, which the Flemish Minister of Mobility & Public Works disagrees with. The fact that there is now Liège on the brand new, blue signpost next to Brussels and Breda is not really something Minister Peeters like to see. After all, it is not a new decision, but one that will be gradually introduced to limit the impact, according to the Flemish Agency for Roads and Traffic.
"The language legislation must be respected, also for our signposts. The Flemish Agency for Roads and Traffic has been instructed to urgently place the correct signs, so it will be Liège and Namur again."
In the morning program of VRT NWS Katrien Kiekens of the Flemish Agency for Roads and Traffic announced that they would like to use the language of the destination more often to indicate cities on those signs. In this way they avoid double designations such as Liège-Liège, Gent-Gand, Lille-Lille. The signs would only provide unnecessary information. According to Liekens, indications such as Lille (Lille) or Gand (Ghent), which we still often see today, make the signage heavier without offering significant added value.
