The first seven stops will be delivered at the start of the upcoming academic year.
The current stops on the Vaartsche Rijn – Utrecht Science Park route will be given a major upgrade in the coming period so that they better meet the wishes and needs of travelers. This includes better shelter with large canopies and good lighting at stops. The first seven stops will be delivered at the start of the upcoming academic year. The last stop on this route will be refurbished at a later date. The province of Utrecht wants to apply this new design for all tram stops in Utrecht, Nieuwegein and IJsselstein. Travelers will then experience the convenience of the tram stops everywhere.
Customized tram stop
The tram line on the Vaartsche Rijn – Utrecht Science Park route has various types of stops. For example, a relatively large number of passengers get on and off at the Padualaan and Heidelberglaan stops. Visitors of the nearby hospitals get on and off at the UMC Utrecht and Wilhelmina Children's Hospital/Prinses Máxima Center stops. Stops De Kromme Rijn and Galgenwaard have the least number of passengers. Utrecht Central Center side is the only tram stop to remain unchanged, because it was already modernized during the renovation of the public transport hub Utrecht CS. Because the stops differ in size and crowds, we customize each stop. For example, the roofs at some stops can be up to 25 meters long. By way of comparison: the current roofs on the stops of this tram line have a length of 4 metres.
Innovative and sustainable
The stops will have a spacious roof with (if possible) a glass wall and a (double-sided) bench. The seat of the sofa is made of sustainable bamboo. Not only LED lamps but also solar panels will be installed in the roof. In addition, the check-in and check-out points and the security cameras will soon be located in the roof. The panels with current travel information will also be placed in the roof after the current signs have been written off. Travelers can recognize the renewed tram stop by the U-OV logo.
Schedule
The work will start at the beginning of June and the new stops will be ready in September. The tram route to the Utrecht Science Park is quieter during this period due to the summer holidays. As a result, fewer travelers will be inconvenienced by the work. They work at the stops during the week as well as on weekends. They make a large part of the roofing during the weekends because we need a crane for this. During smaller activities, such as assembling benches and waste bins, the tram runs according to the timetable. A safety officer supervises the stop where we are currently working. He or she pays attention to the safety of passengers and the people who work on the platform. Province of Utrecht awarded Epsilion Cities the contract. They are responsible for implementation.
