For many of us, riding a motorcycle is a childhood dream. In the Netherlands you can start driving lessons for the light motorcycle (A1) from the age of 17. For the medium-heavy motorcycle (A2) this is possible from the age of 19 if you already have an A1 driving license, if you do not yet have an A1 driving license you can only start driving lessons from the age of 20. For the heavy motorcycle (A) you can take lessons from the age of 21. How many driving lessons someone needs differs per person, of course, but you can check the Driving School Finder at which driving school in your area has the most students pass.
As of July 1, the theory exams for motorcycles and mopeds will be adjusted by the CBR. They do this because a lot of things have changed over the years and the questions need maintenance. In the past, only questions that could be answered with yes or no were asked. In the meantime, that looks very different, now there are also multiple choice questions and drag questions. Questions are also asked about new types of vehicles and environmental legislation.
From 1 July, more use will be made of exam questions that can be used to test more closely whether a candidate has mastered the exam material sufficiently. The pass standard will also be slightly adjusted and there will be more feedback on the new result form about which subjects the candidate knows less well and well. At the end of the exam, a candidate will also no longer be able to view the incorrectly answered questions. The CBR has asked various parties to help think about an appropriate success standard. This final standard of success has been adopted by the CBR.
Now you still have to answer 44 questions out of 50 correctly to pass your theory exam for both motorcycle and moped. From July 1, you must answer 43 questions out of 50 correctly to pass your moped exam. And to pass your motorcycle exam you have to answer 41 of the 50 questions correctly. The adjustments to the motorcycle and moped exam follow the previous changes to the theory exam for the car in 2019. The CBR wants to prepare candidates even better with these adjustments to take to the road safely and responsibly.
