More than a third of the Dutch will go on a trip this May holiday, choosing a destination within Europe or the Netherlands. However, almost half of the holidaymakers (40%) are adjusting their plans because of the rising prices. This is evident from a member poll of the ANWB.

Most Dutch people go on holiday for a week or more during the May holiday. They prefer to travel by car (70%) or by plane (18%) to their holiday destination and often seek out nature and water. Walking, cycling, exploring the area, but also visiting museums, shopping and eating out are on the agenda of many Dutch people this May holiday. The Netherlands, France, Germany, Belgium and Spain are traditionally popular destinations. In their own country, holidaymakers choose Gelderland as their preferred destination.

The Dutch do indicate that due to the rising prices they go on holiday less often and for a shorter period of time, stay closer to home, choose a different period or a different type of holiday. 14 percent of holidaymakers make a different choice due to the increased prices of airline tickets. Yet the Dutch do not just let go of their holidays: 85 percent indicate that they will also book another holiday this year in addition to the May holiday.

Summer months are a favorite

Despite the popularity of the May holiday, most Dutch people still go on holiday in the summer months. Most of them have already made plans for June, July, August and September. Interest in Southern Europe continues, almost 30 percent of the Dutch continue to choose this region despite the high temperatures of last summer. Only 10 percent of holidaymakers will choose another destination instead of Southern Europe this year.

The ANWB poll is a representative, quantitative survey among more than 1000 members aged 18 and over and held in April 2023. ANWB wants to inspire and encourage everyone who goes out to make a sustainable choice, according to the Royal Dutch Tourist Association.
