A Report Crime Anonymously campaign was recently launched in the port of Scheveningen. The municipality, the police and the hotline call on residents and people who work in and around the port to report suspicious situations anonymously. Scheveningen, like any seaport, is vulnerable to crime. This includes drug transport, human smuggling and money laundering. Criminals often depend on knowledge and help from the port to carry out their activities. For example, they are looking for skippers to fish up packages from the sea. Or they use an anonymous apartment to store drugs, weapons or cash. This creates a mixture of the upper and the underworld.

Striking things

It is crucial that the whole community participates in improving safety in the port. That is why we appeal to the vigilance of companies and local residents. They want to make visible what is happening below the surface. This makes the port unattractive for illegal activities.

Possible signals that indicate crime in the port are, for example:

  • Strange boat movements at unusual times;
  • A ship that is overloaded or loaded crookedly;
  • Concealing the original name of a boat.

The following things can be suspicious on the quay:

  • Strangers who load/unload stuff in vans;
  • Companies without customers;
  • Buildings with shuttered windows and camera security.

Through flyers, posters and social media messages, they call on people to anonymously report such suspicious matters. This can be done by calling 0800 – 7000 or via the site www.meldmisdaadanoniem.nl, this foundation is separate from the police. In addition, meetings are organized to make Scheveningers aware of the problem. Targeted investigations can then be carried out on the basis of the reports. For example, we are working together on a safe haven where it is pleasant to live, work and relax, according to the Municipality of The Hague.

Broad approach subversion

The Municipality of The Hague works together with government partners such as the police, the Public Prosecution Service, the Tax and Customs Administration and the RIEC (Regional Information and Expertise Center) The Hague to prevent and tackle subversive crime. The safety of the port area is a joint priority for the government partners in the region. The Meld Misdaad Anoniem campaign is one of the actions to improve this.

They also inform specific groups that use the port about how they can defend themselves against criminals. There will also be extra supervision by enforcers and the police on land and on the water. During the year, several partners will work together during integrated enforcement actions.
